A space-saving and sustainable new building? In the vertical factory of Komax, technology leader for automated wire processing, development, production and administration are located on six floors in close proximity to each other. The shape and construction of the building support energy and climate aspects, such as natural ventilation and lighting, thermal insulation in summer and cooling at night – this has made it possible to use building technology in an economical way.

How would you describe your solution in a few words?

Komax’s vertical factory is an example of how resource-saving, spatial densification can be implemented in industrial areas.

The production and development building is designed as a sustainability-enhancing system. In addition to the minimized land consumption (utilization rate of approx. 6.0) and the compact volume, the façade and the energy-optimized building services concept contribute to this.

The production of Komax’s high-tech machines finds a contemporary home in a climate-adapted low-tech architecture. This promotes the uncomplicated exchange of ideas between employees and thus encourages the transfer of know-how and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Who are your customers?

Wire harness manufacturers worldwide.

What are the environmental benefits of your solution?

The vertical factory has minimal floor space consumption (utilization factor approx. 6.0) and reduces energy consumption with its low-tech approach. This is not a one-off reduction, but an element of the long-term sustainability that the vertical factory stands for.

Komax is pursuing ambitious growth targets. With increasing growth (higher number of machines produced), this reduction has an even greater impact, i.e. the positive effects on the environment increase.

How do you manage to exist on the market?

To maintain and expand its leading position, Komax invests 8–9% of its revenues in research and development every year. A high level of innovation and a unique sales and service network are key components of Komax’s long-term success.

The vertical factory also contributes to this, as almost half of Komax’s around 370 R&D employees worldwide work in this building. The vertical factory is thus the innovation center of Komax.
