Bananatex® from QWSTION is the first biodegradable and plastic-free fabric made from abacá banana plants. These grow sustainably in the Philippines without pesticides, fertilizers or additional water. They contribute to reforestation and biodiversity and improve the income of local farmers. Bananatex® works with fashion, footwear and furniture brands.
How would you describe your solution in a few words?
The Abacá banana plant, from which Bananatex® is created, is cultivated in the Philippine mid- and highlands within a natural ecosystem of sustainable mixed agriculture and forestry, the plant is sturdy and self-sufficient, requiring no pesticides, fertilizer or extra water. These qualities have allowed it to contribute to reforestation in areas of former rainforest that were once cleared for logging, whilst enhancing biodiversity and the economic prosperity of local farmers.

We are happy to share our material with likeminded brands from across various industries that are committed to sustainable alternatives and circularity in the long-term. So far, we have worked with brands in the fashion, accessories, footwear, furniture and automotive industries.
What are the environmental benefits of your solution?
The Abacá banana plants grow in the wild or in agroforestry environments, where different plants and crops complement each other, slightly managed by smallholder farmers. These communities generate a stable source of income by harvesting the fibres on a regular basis. No conventional agriculture tools or machinery are necessary, nor are any chemicals used; rainfall provides sufficient irrigation.
How do you manage to exist on the market?
The solution Bananatex® was founded and funded by QWSTION and its network of partners. Many markets are in need of alternative future materials, we want to offer one solution.
