How would you describe your solution in a few words?
With the Migros plastic collection bag and new take-back points, Migros offers the public an easy way to buy collection bags, collect their plastic waste at home and return the full bags to a Migros store nearby for recycling. The offer is available in most branches in Central Switzerland, branches in the canton of Fribourg and in the city of Lausanne, and in 19 branches in the city of Zurich. Expansion to other areas is being considered on an ongoing basis. For this pioneering project, Migros entered into a partnership with InnoRecycling AG and InnoPlastics AG. The resulting regranulates are to be used again in the Migros Industrie.

What are the environmental benefits of your solution?
Plastic and packaging are a growing concern for Migros and its customers. Migros takes its responsibility seriously and lends a hand: Wherever it makes sense, packaging material and plastic are reduced or replaced. However, plastic packaging is often useful, for example for reasons of hygiene or shelf life and to reduce food waste. By offering plastic recycling and Migros’ efforts to reuse this recycled plastic in its packaging, new material can be dispensed with. In this way, Migros, together with its customers, conserves natural resources and the environment.
How do you manage to exist on the market?
By making the best use of our existing infrastructure, logistics and processes to be cost and impact efficient. And by building trust with our customers over the years so that they can be confident that we are delivering real environmental benefits through plastic recycling.
